Behind the Journey: Penguin Style

Heellooooo Penguins!!! Welcome back to another edition of Behind the Journey! This edition looks a little different and it’s because we are discussing the Penguin Style!

This is Whimsical Puffle here to talk about the beloved Penguin Style! I’m the main designer for the Penguin Style we release each month!

This month’s edition of Penguin Style came with a new page design that we haven’t seen on Club Penguin Journey before. Those of you that played the original game may recognize this style though! I took inspiration from the August 2005 – January 2008 and February 2013 – February 2017 style and reimagined what those two styles could have looked like in the era that we represent on CPJ.

2005-2008
2013-2017

Now you may be asking, why have we done this? Well, if you take a look at our catalog releases, we release NINE NEW pages every month, and if you look at the original game’s release pattern, they typically only added 2-4 NEW pages every month. We have been doing around double the amount OG did each month, which don’t get me wrong, is great, we have so much variety and different items for everyone’s style.

However, each month it also becomes harder and harder with each catalog to release new and exciting items. The reason for this being what we call renders.

Renders are what we call art of the penguin that is included on the page of the catalog, and essentially, we are running out of renders we can use. Since the original game went through a lot of art style changes and we only represent one era of that we are severely limited on renders that we can use since renders of items from 2005-2008 and 2013-2017 do not match CPJ’s artstyle.

We try our best to utilize renders we have, recoloring them, editing them, or sometimes we even draw fully custom ones. But at the end of the day, as much as we’d love to, it’s not feasible for us to make an entirely custom catalog with all custom renders.

By adjusting how items are implemented, we’re able to better manage our time while still giving you the same amount of new items each month.

The decision to incorporate pages like this not only makes the catalog easier to make in the sense that we have more freedom on items we can release, it also gives you, our players, a lot more variety and quantity.

We want your feedback though! Do you love it, do you hate it, what could we change? We want to hear that! If you head over to our discord we will have a poll running shortly where you can tell us what you think! Have more to say or share? Please don’t hesitate to send us a ticket here and let us know what you think!

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and I truly hope you enjoy this month’s Penguin Style!

Until next time, Waddle on!
